For successful, long-term weight loss, you must make permanent changes in your lifestyle and health habits. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;How do you make those permanent changes? Consider following these six strategies for weight-loss success. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;1. Make a commitment&lt;/h2&gt;Permanent weight loss takes time and effort — and a lifelong commitment. Make sure that you're ready to make permanent changes and that you do so for the right reasons. &lt;br /&gt;To stay committed to your weight loss, you need to be focused. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. So as you're planning new weight-loss-related lifestyle changes, make a plan to address other stresses in your life first, such as financial problems or relationship conflicts. While these stresses may never go away completely, managing them better should improve your ability to focus on achieving a healthier lifestyle. Then, once you're ready to launch your weight-loss plan, set a start date and then — start. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;2. Find your inner motivation&lt;/h2&gt;No one else can make you lose weight. You must undertake diet and exercise changes to please yourself. What's going to give you the burning drive to stick to your weight-loss plan? Make a list of what's important to you to help stay motivated and focused, whether it's an upcoming beach vacation or better overall health. Then find a way to make sure that you can call on your motivational factors during moments of temptation. Perhaps you want to post an encouraging note to yourself on the pantry door, for instance. &lt;br /&gt;While you have to take responsibility for your own behavior for successful weight loss, it helps to have support — of the right kind. If you prefer to keep your weight-loss plans private, be accountable to yourself by having regular weigh-ins and recording your diet and exercise progress in a journal. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;3. Set realistic goals&lt;/h2&gt;It may seem obvious to set realistic weight-loss goals. But do you really know what's realistic? Over the long term, it's best to aim for losing 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week, although initially you might lose weight more quickly than that if you make significant changes — just be sure the changes are health supporting. To lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day, through a lower calorie diet and regular exercise. &lt;br /&gt;When you're setting goals, think about both process and outcome goals. "Exercise regularly" is an example of a process goal, while "Lose 30 pounds" is an example of an outcome goal. It isn't essential that you have an outcome goal, but you should set process goals because changing your processes — your habits — is a key to weight loss. Also make sure that your goals are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-limited. An example of a SMART goal is aiming to walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week for the next three months, and logging your results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;4. Enjoy healthier foods&lt;/h2&gt;Adopting a new eating style that promotes weight loss must include lowering your total calorie intake. But decreasing calories need not mean giving up taste, satisfaction or even ease of meal preparation. One way you can lower your calorie intake is by eating more plant-based foods — fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition. &lt;br /&gt;In particular, get your weight loss started by eating a healthy breakfast every day; eating at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily; and using healthy fats, such as olive oil, vegetable oils and nut butters. In addition, cut back on sugar, choose low-fat dairy products and keep meat consumption to a 3-ounce portion (about the size of a deck of cards). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;5. Get active, stay active&lt;/h2&gt;The key to weight loss is burning more calories than you consume. Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound (0.5 kilogram) of fat, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you take in to lose 1 pound. So if you cut 500 calories from your typical diet each day, you'd lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories). &lt;br /&gt;While you can lose weight without exercise, exercise plus calorie restriction can help give you the weight-loss edge. Exercise can help burn off the excess calories you can't cut through diet alone. Exercise also offers numerous health benefits, including boosting your mood, strengthening your cardiovascular system and reducing your blood pressure. Exercise can also help in maintaining weight loss. Studies show that people who maintain their weight loss over the long term get regular physical activity. &lt;br /&gt;How many calories you burn depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of your activities. One of the best ways to lose body fat is through steady aerobic exercise — such as brisk walking — for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Any extra movement helps burn calories, though. Lifestyle activities may be easier to fit into your day. Think about ways you can increase your physical activity throughout the day if you can't fit in formal exercise on a given day. For example, make several trips up and down stairs instead of using the elevator, or park at the far end of the lot when shopping. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;6. Change your perspective&lt;/h2&gt;It's not enough to eat healthy foods and exercise for only a few weeks or even months if you want long-term, successful weight loss. These habits must become a way of life. Lifestyle changes start with taking an honest look at your eating patterns and daily routine. After assessing your personal challenges to weight loss, try working out a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. I lost weight in 2007-2008 and maintained it. Part of my success was attributed to an illness I was unaware of, a symptom of my weight loss if you may. I was told that I had gallstones, which was why every time I ate I was in so much pain, especially after indulging in anything that had fat ergo the loss of more weight. I learned what foods to avoid which was pretty much a lot of foods except all the healthy stuff. I had decided that I was going to live with my stones and just adapt to a new way of life in terms of what I ate and drink, great plan right emmmm no so much. I was pretty much in pain all the time after a certain point so much so that drinking H2O was proving impossible. Within a week I met with a surgeon and made an appointment, 1 week, after all the resistance I had put up.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;On a crisp Friday afternoon the surgery was done and in 2 hrs I left the hospital, to go home, this was the beginning of my downward spiral, and the regaining of all the weight I had lost 35 lbs to be exact . All the horror stories I had read, on the different websites and blogs that everyone else had written and talked about did not apply to me at all. The worst thing that happened to me and still happens now but not with as much frequency is gas pains when I eat a high fat meals or processed foods. I gained all the weight back faster than I had lost it, (6 months to gain it took over a year to lose). My&amp;nbsp;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 15px;"&gt;&lt;em style="font-style: normal; font-weight: bold;"&gt;Cholecystectomy&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;(a fancy name for gall bladder removal) was like a license to eat whatever I wanted, and why not? I did not have any of the horrible side effects experienced by so many so why not?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I really regret the way that I handled this. I gained back the 35 lbs and 10 more for good measure. I am now at an all time highest weight of 260 lbs and I am holding steady. I can't take this anymore, I am DONE, I am tired, and I am sick and tired. Enough is enough, why is it so hard to just simply snap out of it and just fix my life.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;With Christ anything I put my mind to is possible.So I am going to start by putting may faith in Christ alone for everything in my life. I pray for healing in all areas of my life, I am really doing my 3 lovely children a disservice by the way that I handle my affairs. If you're truly ambivalent about making changes in your lifestyle or are doing this to please someone else, you're likely to fail. When making changes, decide what's right for your lifestyle. Your best friend's diet and exercise plan may be completely wrong for your habits and interests. The key is to find a system that works for you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Don't blame yourself if you aren't perfect&lt;/strong&gt;. If you once fail at your attempt to curtail your overeating, it doesn't mean you are a failure at weight control and that you should just give up. Accept that you made a poor choice, but don't let that poor choice influence the rest of your plan. The same holds true with exercise. Skipping a few workouts doesn't mean you can't get back on track. Weight control does not involve making perfect choices all the time; rather, it's about attempting to make good choices more often than poor ones.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Avoid surroundings where you know you're tempted to make poor food choices&lt;/strong&gt;. Everyone has a time when we're most likely to overeat, whether it's the morning coffee break or after-work gathering with friends. Try to plan other activities or distractions for those times, or plan in advance how you're going to handle them and stick to it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Surround yourself with people who support your efforts&lt;/strong&gt;. Even our good friends can knowingly or unknowingly sabotage weight-loss attempts. Spend time with those people who will not pressure you to make poor food choices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Decide on some nonfood rewards for yourself when you reach interim goals&lt;/strong&gt;. For examples, at the end of the first week of healthy eating or after the first 5 pounds lost, buy yourself a new CD or book.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Stock your pantry and refrigerator with healthy foods&lt;/strong&gt;. Get rid of the high-calorie, low-nutrition snacks like chips and candy. I have NO discipline whatsoever in all areas of my life including Exercise and weightloss. So now that I am owning this hopefully I am on the road to recovery and i will be healed from the diseases that ail me that are pure Laziness, Procrastination, complete lack of Discipline and lack of self respect because if I respected my body I would not treat it the way that I have been doing. I was fearfully and wonderfully made and its time I started appriciating the way that God made me and respecting his wonderful work. You've heard it ALL before and I'm going to run it down for you again. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;1.&lt;/strong&gt; Time to change. Make your mind up once and for all that you are ready and will focus on becoming a better and healthier you. This starts in your brain. You have to want to change in order to become successful. Keep on doing the same 'ole stuff you're doing and you will keep on getting the same 'ole results you keep on getting! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. &lt;/strong&gt;Get serious and come up with a plan. And when I say that I mean you should be at a point where you are sick and tired of being big and out of shape. Making up a plan isn't hard at all. What you should do first is look at the way you're eating. You know what's good and you know what's bad. It's just like knowing right from wrong. You can be good to yourself by doing the right things for yourself. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3.&lt;/strong&gt; Fitness is GOLD. As a beginner you're most likely not going to know where to start so what can do is buy a beginner cardio workout DVD and do that while researching a program that is right for you. There are loads of teams here on the Spark and when you find the right one for you then get to it. You can do several programs at a time, whatever makes you happy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;4. &lt;/strong&gt;Push yourself/Motivation. You must stay on track...eating and working out wise. When you don't, you only fail yourself. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;5.&lt;/strong&gt; Make the most out of your workout. Each time you go to work out, make every minute count and push yourself further and further each time you workout. Your body and mind will thank you for it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;6.&lt;/strong&gt; Educate yourself. Refer to fitness books, websites, teams on Spark, etc. to get information to improve yourself. Learn about the different muscle groups, learn about nutrition amongst other things. It's fun to do and you're learning at the same time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;7.&lt;/strong&gt; Track your progress. Yes, write down everything you eat and count calories. Some people say not to count calories, but I say do it because in order to lose weight you need to know how many calories are going in and how many you need to burn. So if you know how many calories you are consuming you will know how many to burn off. Also track your fitness and numbers so that you will know what you did last time and how far to push yourself the next time. If you run into a problem, let's say a "plateau", how will you be able to go back to see what you've been doing all this time to remedy the problem? You must know what you're putting into your body, how you're feeling everyday, know what exercises you are doing, how much weight you are lifting, etc. because you will need to make adjustments to your overall program as you become more fit and stronger. It only makes sense. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;8.&lt;/strong&gt; Not a gym person? I'm not either. I have a home gym and it's quite small, most of my equipment is used and it could be better, but it's mine. People say they don't have space for this and that? Well, I think it's time for a little spring cleaning EARLY. Get rid of the junk and clutter out of your house and either put it up for sale on Craigslist.com or give it away on Freecycle.com or sell it on Ebay to make room for the rest of your life. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What things should you have in your home gym when you don't have a lot of space? A small stationary bike for cardio, a compact (folding incline) work bench, dumbbells (different weights) and small rack, a full size mirror you can hang on the wall (to watch your form), workout gloves, stability ball, workout mat, a stop watch, a radio (an MP3 player is better) and a tv/dvd player near by and workout DVDs, reference books and inspiration pictures/collage. Some optional stuff can be a medicine ball, a heart rate monitor, resistance bands (if you don't want to use weights, but sometimes you will want to alternate), a step, a poster of the muscles groups, in the body, sculpting bar, barbell, a treadmill or elliptical machine. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;9.&lt;/strong&gt; Effective Cardio Exercises: Jumping Jacks, Jump Rope, Running and Swimming because they are all high intensity and it uses your weight in order to get your heart rate up. These exercises are more effective than using a stationary bike or an elliptical machine. You want to move your lower and upper body in order to burn more calories. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;10.&lt;/strong&gt; What do you eat? Well, you need at least three servings of protein, two to three servings of fruit, two the three servings of dairy or veggies at least two to three servings of fiber in your diet per day. Limit your fat and sugar intake. Keep yourself hydrated with water, green tea, zero calorie Gatorade (or any other brand) or sweeten with Splenda if you don't like plain water. I have done it the past year and lost 31lbs I feel so different. I look in the mirror and smile because I love what I see. I am really excited of what the new year has to bring. I have 74lbs to go and I know that I can do it. I love my family they are definately rooting for me and they have set such good examples for me. Follow these six strategies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;1. Make a commitment&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Permanent weight loss takes time and effort. It requires focus and a lifelong commitment. Make sure that you're ready to make permanent changes and that you do so for the right reasons.&lt;br /&gt;No one else can make you lose weight. In fact, external pressure — often from people closest to you — may make matters worse. You must undertake diet and exercise changes to please yourself.&lt;br /&gt;As you're planning new weight-related lifestyle changes, try to resolve any other problems in your life. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. So make sure you aren't distracted by other major life issues, such as marital or financial problems. Timing is key to success. Ask yourself if you're ready to take on the challenges of serious weight loss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. Get emotional support&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Only you can help yourself lose weight by taking responsibility for your own behavior. But that doesn't mean that you have to do everything alone. Ideally, find people who will listen to your concerns and feelings, spend time exercising with you, and share the priority you've placed on developing a healthier lifestyle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3. Set a realistic goal&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you're considering what to expect from your new eating and exercise plan, be realistic. Healthy weight loss occurs slowly and steadily. Aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. To do this, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day through a low-calorie diet and regular exercise. Losing weight more rapidly means losing water weight or muscle tissue, rather than fat.&lt;br /&gt;Make your goals "process goals," such as exercising regularly, rather than "outcome goals," such as losing 50 pounds. Changing your process — your habits — is the key to weight loss. Make sure that your process goals are realistic, specific and measurable, for example, you'll walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;4. Enjoy healthier foods&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Adopting a new eating style that promotes weight loss must include lowering your total calorie intake. But decreasing calories need not mean giving up taste, satisfaction or even ease of meal preparation. One way you can lower your calorie intake is by eating more plant-based foods — fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition. Cutting back on calories is easier if you focus on limiting fat.&lt;br /&gt;To lose weight, talk to your doctor about setting these daily calorie goals:&lt;br /&gt;Your current weight in pounds&lt;br /&gt;Daily calorie goal&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;WOMEN~~ weight range&lt;/strong&gt; 250 or less  &lt;strong&gt;recommended calories&lt;/strong&gt; 1,200&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Very low calorie diets aren't a healthy long-term strategy. Fewer than 1,200 calories a day for women and 1,400 calories for men aren't generally recommended. If your calories are too low, you run the risk of not getting all of the nutrients you need for good health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;5. Get active, stay active&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dieting alone can help you lose weight. Cutting 250 calories from your daily diet can help you lose about half a pound a week: 3,500 calories equals 1 pound of fat. But add a 30-minute brisk walk four days a week, and you can double your rate of weight loss.&lt;br /&gt;The goal of exercise for weight loss is to burn more calories, although exercise offers many other benefits as well. How many calories you burn depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of your activities. One of the best ways to lose body fat is through steady aerobic exercise — such as walking — for more than 30 minutes most days of the week.&lt;br /&gt;Even though regularly scheduled aerobic exercise is best for losing fat, any extra movement helps burn calories. Lifestyle activities may be easier to fit into your day. Think about ways you can increase your physical activity throughout the day. For example, make several trips up and down stairs instead of using the elevator, or park at the far end of the lot.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;6. Change your lifestyle&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's not enough to eat healthy foods and exercise for only a few weeks or even several months. You have to include these behaviors into your life. To do that, you have to change the behaviors that helped make you overweight in the first place. Lifestyle changes start with taking an honest look at your eating habits and daily routine.&lt;br /&gt;After assessing your personal challenges to weight loss, try working out a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. Simply admitting your own challenges won't get you past them entirely. But it helps in planning how you'll deal with them and whether you're going to succeed in losing weight once and for all.&lt;br /&gt;You likely will have an occasional setback. But instead of giving up entirely, simply start fresh the next day. Remember that you're planning to change your life. I hope that these tips can help someone else as they will be helping me too.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Nutrition......... &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;1.Eat Low Glycemic, low refined sugar meals. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;2. "Everything done in moderation." &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;3. Every weekend is a cheat weekend. But Mon- Fri be strict with your nutrition. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;4. Have a protein shake for breakfast &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;5. Be careful of high sugar content in canned foods &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;6. Flavor foods naturally &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;7. Fresh salsa is the best low fat food flavoring &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;8. Don't Skip meals. It puts your body into starvation mode and increases the chances that more of the calories from your next meal will be stored as fat. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;9. Don't drink diet soda- it can trigger a craving for carbohydrates. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;10. If you are eating out, start with the veggies portion of your meal, then move to meat, then finally the starches. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;11. Eat "The Good", "The Bad", then "The Ugly" foods. The trick is to make yourself full on the GOOD foods so you will eat less of the UGLY foods. Working out.... &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;12. "Crunches are a waste of time" &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;13. Lifting weights with exercises that target the big muscle groups (chest, back, legs, &amp;amp; butt) is the way to get better abs. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;14. The only way to truly get shredded is to have a pretty balanced diet with a nice balance of cardio, but most importantly, weight lifting. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;15. Cardio is over-rated -resistance training your big muscle groups is what speeds metabolism. 16. If you can't afford a personal trainer, educate yourself on fitness. Buy magazines, a book, dvd's, etc. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;17. The plyometric jump squat and lunges are great for your butt. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;18. Fitness is about the "Three F's"...Function, Form and Fatigue. It's about performing the right function back-to-back with perfect form to complete fatigue. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;19. For great shoulders and arms.... Do the push-up/punch combo. Start by doing as many push-ups in a row as you can. Then stand up, grab a couple of soup cans and punch one arm out, then the other, for one minute. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;20. It's not about how much time you spend in the gym. It's about getting the most bang for your buck. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;21. Swimming is a great total body exercise. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;22. Simplicity is key. Do not over-think your fitness routine or your diet. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;23. Less Medication, More Motivation. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;24. High intensity training can lessen the need for sleep aids and anit-depressants medications. I know but I been really good and tomorrow I begin bootcamp. I am not much of an exerciser but I hope to pick up this habit. I dont have an excuse I am done making excuses abt anything because I am driving this train and I am the one who keeps derailing this. I think I now know how easy it is to go mad. I feel like I am going mad.
